Ukraine Offers Russia Proposal to Turn to Diplomacy

(MENAFN) Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha on Monday characterized Kyiv's ceasefire overture to Russia as "a serious proposal" to halt the conflict and chart a path toward diplomatic resolution.

"If Moscow is prepared to end hostilities, it can do so already tomorrow night. Ukraine is ready: at midnight from May 5th to May 6th," Sybiha wrote on X.

Sharpening his tone, the foreign minister added: "Peace cannot wait until 'parades' and 'celebrations.'"— an apparent rebuke of Moscow's decision to time its own proposed truce around Russia's Victory Day commemorations.

Sybiha further urged Ukraine's international partners, peace-advocating nations, and global organizations to throw their weight behind the immediate cessation of hostilities.

The exchange came after Russia's Defense Ministry announced earlier Monday a unilateral ceasefire for May 8–9 in observance of Victory Day, expressing hope that Kyiv would reciprocate in kind.

Hours later, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy formalized Kyiv's position, announcing that Ukraine would enforce a ceasefire regime with Russia beginning "at 00:00 on the night of May 5-6" — effectively putting the onus on Moscow to respond before the window opens.
