Meloni Reaffirms Defense Stance

(MENAFN) Italy’s prime minister indicated that her stance on boosting military expenditures remains unchanged, while highlighting that the country is currently confronted with more pressing concerns, as reported by a news agency.

“I haven't changed my mind … on the issue of defense spending,” Giorgia Meloni stated during a press briefing following a Cabinet session on Tuesday. "I take responsibility for it because I know it's not a very popular issue."

She noted that “responsible people should also do what's right, not just what's immediately popular,” underscoring once again that defense funding continues to be “an absolute priority.” Nonetheless, she pointed out that immediate attention must shift toward financial and economic matters.

“Today I must prioritize what's happening on the economic level, because if I no longer have a nation, there's no need for me to defend it,” she explained.

Meloni further emphasized that her administration aims to carefully manage its obligations according to importance. “Maybe we won't do everything we could have done or should have done, let's try to make ends meet,” she added.
