US Commander Visits Panama to Boost Security, Fight Drug Trafficking

(MENAFN) Gen. Francis L. Donovan, commander of the US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), visited Panama for high-level meetings with government officials aimed at combating narcotrafficking and reinforcing the defense of the Panama Canal.

“The U.S. and Panama share a close partnership that is vital to advancing security and stability in the Western Hemisphere,” the command said on social media.

Donovan expressed anticipation about meeting US service members from the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group stationed in Panama. “USS Nimitz and the guided-missile destroyer USS Gridley are powerful assets in our nation’s arsenal,” he said, highlighting that their presence demonstrates the US commitment against drug cartels.

Last week, US Naval Forces announced that the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Nimitz would deploy to the SOUTHCOM area of responsibility as part of the Southern Seas 2026 mission conducted by US Naval Forces Southern Command/U.S. 4th Fleet.

The visit follows last year’s agreements between the US and Panama, which included a memorandum of understanding on cooperative security activities and a joint declaration on the Panama Canal’s security and operation. This framework allows US warships and auxiliary vessels to navigate the canal “first and free.”
