Activists Request Safeguards as Sumud Flotilla Nears Blockade Zone

(MENAFN) A convoy of 11 vessels carrying humanitarian supporters is approaching the Israel-imposed blockade of the Gaza Strip and has urgently called for international intervention to ensure their protection.

The activists, part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), are urging the global community to uphold their rights as outlined under international law.

“We are close to the possible interception point, and call to the international community to ensure the safety that we are entitled under international law,” stated the group in an official declaration.

The flotilla, dubbed “The Thousands of Madleens,” arrived off the coast of Alexandria in Egypt early Sunday. The convoy was then approximately 560 kilometers (348 miles) from Gaza.

This latest voyage is another attempt to oppose what they describe as Israel’s unlawful siege on the Palestinian territory.

In a direct message to European institutions, the FFC emphasized their concerns: “To all governmental and judicial institutions of European States and the European Union: this is a strong and firm appeal. We are at sea, sailing to Gaza and we are concerned,” they said.

The organization further explained that those on board include elected officials, medical personnel, journalists, seafarers, and civilians, all acting within the framework of an authorized humanitarian operation.

“We are carrying out our legitimate work as deputies, journalists, doctors, nurses, sailors and citizens. We are a lawful and authorized humanitarian mission. Now we are worried about what may happen to us and the ongoing brutality that keeps unfold to the Palestinians,” the statement read.

The flotilla’s coordinators also revealed they have received “alarming testimonies” from members of the Global Sumud Flotilla, detailing incidents of mistreatment, physical assault, and torture during what they described as “unlawful detention in Israel.”

These accounts, according to the organizers, have been validated by affiliated support groups.
