Survey Shows Over Half of UK Workers Worried About AI Job Risks

(MENAFN) More than half of adults across the UK are now worried about how artificial intelligence (AI) could affect their employment, according to a new survey released Wednesday by the Trade Congress Union (TUC).

The poll, which gathered responses from 2,600 UK adults, uncovered what the TUC described as “deep disquiet and concern” among the public over the fast-paced growth of AI—particularly regarding its potential disruption to jobs.

In total, 51% of respondents said they were concerned about the impact of AI and emerging technologies on their employment, with fears largely centered on job losses or changes to working conditions. The TUC is now urging the government to introduce a “step change” in how the UK manages and regulates AI development.

Concerns cut across political lines: 52% of Labour voters, 49% of Conservative voters, and 52% of Reform voters all reported similar apprehensions about AI’s implications for their livelihoods.

Younger workers appear especially vulnerable. Among those aged 25–34, concern rose sharply to 62%, suggesting heightened anxiety among those in the early stages of their careers.

The survey also highlighted a strong public appetite for inclusive governance of AI. Half of those polled said that both workers and unions should have an equal role alongside businesses in shaping the country’s AI future. Only 17% disagreed with that view.

Kate Bell, assistant general secretary at the TUC, acknowledged the potential of AI to drive positive change—if handled responsibly.

“But for this to happen, workers must be placed at the heart of AI innovation,” said Bell.

She cautioned against leaving AI’s trajectory unchecked, warning that the consequences could be socially damaging.

She cautioned that without proper oversight and in the hands of the wrong actors, the rise of AI could “entrench rampant inequality,” leading to job displacement or deterioration while increasing profits for shareholders.
